The Rio had the Gamma 1.6-liter GDI engine but will now be equipped with the Gamma 2 engine, which is a 1.6-liter MPI engine for improved performance. This engine also has an iVT transmission to replace the six-speed automatic transmission. The Rio also has an increase in fuel efficiency with 33 mpg in the city and 41 mpg on the highway for a combined 36 mpg. The previous year model has 28 mpg in the city, 37 mpg on the highway, and a combined fuel efficiency of 32 mpg.
