4 Tips For Saving Gas In A Traffic Jam
Maintain Tire Pressure
While this tip won’t help you much once you are trapped in traffic, one of the best ways to get the most of every drop of fuel is to make sure your tires are filled to the correct air pressure. Tires that are underinflated just a few PSI are significantly less efficient, not to mention less safe. Get in the habit of checking your tire pressure each time you fill up for gas.
Avoid Quick Stops and Starts
If you have been stopped in traffic for quite some time, it can be easy to get excited about even a little movement forward. But, don’t jump on the gas just to pump the brakes in a few seconds anyway. It eats up fuel like crazy. Slow and steady is the name of the game.
Turn Off the A/C
While your air conditioning system doesn’t eat up a ton of fuel, it does use some. So, if you are trying your best to conserve and have the option to turn it off it would be a good idea.
Keep Your Windows Up
The resistance created from having your windows open means your car needs to work harder to propel you forward and thus will use more fuel. To keep fuel usage to a bare minimum, keep the windows rolled up and the air conditioning off if at all possible. Of course, if you are driving during warm weather be sure to keep the cabin cool enough that things stay comfortable.
