Knowing how to replace the battery on your car is a great skill to have. Not only will this save you money that you’d originally have to pay for the work put into the car, but it’s a great opportunity to learn more about the maintenance your vehicle needs. So, here’s how you replace your car battery and the tools you’ll need to do so.
What tools do I need to change a car battery?
First, you’ll need to get the replacement battery. Fetch baking soda from your kitchen, and a wire brush as well. These will be used to clean the battery tray after you take the battery out. You’ll also need a wrench to disconnect the battery.

Make sure that you know what terminal is what. Usually, the positive terminal is red, and has a plus sign, while the negative terminal is usually black, and has a negative sign. You’ll want to disconnect the negative, or black, terminal first. Then, you can disconnect the positive terminal. You can do this by using the wrench to loosen the clamps. After that, you can take the old battery out, keeping in mind that car batteries can be quite heavy.
Now you can take the baking soda and brush and clean off the tray the battery had sat in by mixing the baking soda in water and using that mixture, and the wire brush, to scrub gently at where the battery sat. Then, put the new battery in where the old one sat and use the clamps that kept the old one secure for the new battery.
After that, you’ll need to reconnect the terminals in the opposite order of what you did to remove the old battery. This means you’ll connect the positive terminal first, then the negative terminal.
You are almost finished. Now, you just need to lightly spray each terminal with lithium grease. This will help prevent corrosion.
There you have it; a replaced battery. Just remember to drive safely!
