Is your car not starting? Don’t panic yet. Here are the top 6 reasons why your vehicle won’t start.
If your car doesn’t crank
Dead battery: lights won’t turn on, nothing happens when you turn the key
Broken ignition switch: if everything else turns on except for the car engine (that means your battery is fine, since the lights turn on)
Broken starter: can be confused with the ignition switch or a dead battery, though you’ll commonly hear a click if the starter is the culprit
If your car cranks but doesn’t start
Bad spark plug: if your car isn’t as responsive or fuel efficient as you remember it being, you may have a bad spark plug. Without it, your engine can’t start.
Empty gas tank: can you remember the last time you filled up your tank? If it’s been a while, there might be no gas in the tank.
Fuel filter: many fuel filters actually need to be replaced every 10,000-15,000 miles. If it isn’t, then the gas in the tank won’t be able to reach the engine.
Wheel lock: if you put the key into the ignition, but it won’t turn, try jiggling the wheel a bit. Many vehicles have an anti-theft feature that locks the wheel when you take out the key.
